Wingspan December 2010

December 6, 2010

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul,
and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a
second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Colossians Ch. 3,V. 1

Message from The Head Of School

Advent Greetings:

It is already the Season of Preparation. I hope your season will be all you
have wished it would be. Here is a special Advent Prayer for my St. John’s
School family:
Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy
Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.
We, who have so much to do, seek quiet spaces to hear Your voice
each day.
We, who are anxious over many things, look forward to Your coming
among us.
We, who are blessed in so many ways, long for the complete joy of
your Kingdom.
We, whose hearts are heavy, seek the joy of Your presence.
We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.
To You we say, “Come Lord Jesus!”
Thank you for all you have done this past year to keep our school the great
school that it is.

Thank you,
Kaye Nelson, Head of School

Middle School News

The Middle School Astronomy class spent Tuesday at the General Thomas P. Stafford Air and
Space Museum in Weatherford, OK. We toured the museum, filled with items from astronaut
Stafford’s long military career and from his years with NASA. We also took a brief side trip
to see the wind generators near the city as we’re studying alternative forms of energy in both
science classes.

6th grade is reviewing fractions in math, learning about the Gold Rush and Mexican-American
War in history, and studying Earth’s energy resources in science. In literature, we are reading A
Christmas Carol, and we’ve just completed an essay on Thanksgiving.

8th grade continues to study algebra with slope-intercept functions as this chapter’s topic. In
science, we’re learning about forms of energy and power/work calculations. The Roman
Republic and Empire is our study in history, while in literature we are reading Shakespeare’s
Julius Caesar.

The annual Harvest Food Drive ends this Friday, December 3rd! Please bring
in your donation of cans and the Girl Scouts will collect them and donate them to the
regional food bank. Every twelve (12) cans of soup, vegetables, tuna, milk, meat, fruit,
beans, chili, or stew earns an out-of-uniform pass or a pajama pass for the student!
Thanks for your support. :)
