The first grade classroom is prepared each day to meet the developmental needs of children as they continue to grow, including emphasis on developing independence, self-discipline, and responsibility.  Part of that process includes introducing homework daily.  Also, daily take-home books with grade leveled readers, paired reading, weekly reading buddies and one-on-one reading with the teacher.

The first grade language arts program uses all modes of communication including reading, writing, utilizing spellingcity.com, spelling, listening, illustrating and doing.  All these areas are drawn together to create learning experiences that combine more than one aspect of the learning experience.  The handwriting program used at this level is Handwriting Without Tears.  Children’s literature through the Houghton Mifflin Reading Program provides a solid foundation for learning.  Activities used within the Open Court Spelling and Vocabulary Series provide multi-sensory learning for children at all levels within the first grade classroom.  Literacy Centers provide a hands-on, developmentally appropriate approach to learning.  This includes beginning, middle, and ending sounds, short and long vowel words, word families, compound words, synonyms, antonyms, punctuation, capitalization, and sequencing.

Social Studies and Science are explored through various methods as they are integrated into the curriculum.  Science is also hands-on through daily interaction with our classroom pets.  Our math program uses the Harcourt/Brace Math Advantage program.  Some of the skills learned include patterning, measuring, making and studying graphs, counting, numeration, addition, subtraction, money, problem solving, and place value.

Our Ipad is a daily center activity with cross-curriculum apps available encompassing multiple levels of interest and ablity.

The students also participate in Spanish, computer lab, art, library, physical education, Sacred Studies, and Chapel weekly.
