4th Grade

The fourth grade language arts curriculum includes the recognition and application of proofreading skills which builds a strong foundation for written communication.  Using paragraph form, students work with sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization and expand their knowledge of spelling and vocabulary.  Two different forms of instruction are used in the fourth grade.  The Open Court Reading Program provides teaching in sound and word recognition and application of skills with practice in reading a variety of literature selections.  The second form of instruction uses short novel reading.  This gives the students an opportunity to read literature that deals with different genres and writing styles.  In addition, an expanded vocabulary is developed, and there is an emphasis on reading comprehension and literary forms.

The social studies curriculum includes memorizing states and capitals, as well as continued knowledge of Oklahoma geography and history.  Science classes include a study of animal and plant communities, food chains, and the survival and change of these populations provides a perspective on the interrelationship between these and the human communities studied in social studies.  Students also study the Earth’s crust, what makes volcanoes and earthquakes, and how to observe and forecast weather.

New concepts in mathematics include multiplication of two and three digit numbers, multi-digit division with remainders, reading and writing of decimals and fractions, addition and subtraction of mixed numbers, and a study graphs.

Students in fourth grade have specialized instruction in art, Spanish, computer classes, religion, library, P. E., music/drama and Chapel.  Students in the fourth grade also have the opportunity to play a band instrument.

5th Grade

The fifth grade language arts program consists of sentence structure, punctuation, parts of speech, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, paragraph structure, reading and creative writing.  The culminating activity of the fifth grade language arts program is a major project on one of the states in the United States.  The project involves research skills and report writing.  Students read and study a variety of books with an eye to plot, character, setting, and theme.  Much of the reading is coordinated with the history program to give students a more interesting and informed look at the literature and the people whom the books are written.  Book reports encourage students to read widely in the genres of biography, American history, mystery, non-fiction, and children’s classics.  Silent and oral reading builds reading confidence.

Fifth grade history begins with a survey of American history from the early Americans through the Civil War.  Students refine their research and writing skills as they prepare reports on famous Native Americans and the United States.  In science, fifth grade students receive a survey of topics, with emphasis on scientific method and laboratory safety.  Laboratory skills include making collections, using chemicals and glassware safely, and performing experiments to increase understanding of concepts taught in class.  The daily care of several classroom pets enhances the student’s appreciation of the complexity of nature.

New concepts in mathematics include factors and prime numbers, multiples of numerals, addition,  subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers, basic geometry, standard units of measure, and metric units of measure.

Students in the fifth grade have specialized instruction in art, religion, Spanish, computer lab, P. E., band and music/drama.
