St. John’s Episcopal School believes in the education of the whole child. The pre-kindergarten program is based on the developmental approach to learning. By providing activities geared to each child’s cognitive, social, emotional, and neurological level of development, we intend to lay the foundation for a productive, creative life. In some cases, this is a child’s first school experience. Great care is taken to make each child feel accepted and successful in all of his/her endeavors.

Learning Centers divide our classrooms in such a way as to allow the children to make choices freely and independently. Activities are developed to stimulate, challenge and encourage the children to eagerly and successfully advance at their own rate. The children are encouraged to explore all areas set up in the classroom. An enjoyable, natural approach to learning  is provided each day. “Creative play” to young children is their “work”. Each activity has a purpose: to develop and enrich skills that are necessary to be successful in reading and mathematics. Centers include: Language Arts, Math, Art, Blocks, Dramatic Play, Manipulatives, Large Motor, Discovery, and Listening.

Physical movement, gross motor, is encouraged and time for outdoor play is scheduled every day – weather permitting. The pre-kindergarten morning includes classes in Music, Physical Education, Reading Buddies, Cooking, Handwriting Without Tears, Chapel on Wednesday mornings and visits to the school library each week. Chapel in prayers, songs and Bible stories.

Our pre-kindergarten class is for those children who are 4 before August 1st. There is no screening or testing for admission to this class. The pre-kindergarten  program is from 8:15 am to 11:15 am Monday through Friday. We have an extended afternoon program for those needing all day care that lasts until 3:30 pm.
